In ChatGPT, the “GPT” stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer.

  • Generative – it can create (generate) new text rather than just retrieving it.
  • Pre-trained – it was trained on a massive dataset of text before being fine-tuned for conversations.
  • Transformer – the underlying neural network architecture, introduced by Google in 2017, that’s very good at understanding and producing human-like language.

So “ChatGPT” basically means: a chat system built on a generative, pre-trained transformer model.

  1. Despite whatever glee, the Awful Truth is ChatGPT is getting slower and slower; this is just the latest round of it. Just like the One Cloud Fits All mythos same will likely be found true with AI. Edge smarts. The default ‘thinking longer’ aspects to cGPT5 is easily 10x to 100x (and sometimes more) slower.
